St malo Chronicles

So packed up all the gear at the lovely campsite in reasonable weather…I was in no hurry as it was to be a short 40k day direct to st Malo or so I thought!!

First bit is over the flat polder land which can be seen to be very fertile and is heavily farmed with all types of crops.

Anyhow at one of several changes of road I saw a lady emerge from the greenway and stop in the road.  So I said bonjour….and found out this was penny, who in her own words unfortunately has reached 70 and so decided to go on her first bike tour of 5 days, living in hotels.  She was also going to st Malo….but via the longer EV4(EURO VELO) Route via cancal(I was to go this way on way back…hence short cut getting there).

So I said let’s go together….only an extra 20k.   And so we did…occasionly getting lost but made it to st Malo and it’s walled old town.

We agreed to do our own thing next day but meet up at 6pm for a dinner out the next day.

While we where doing that who popped out the crowd but William, he confirmed that he was at campsite…so agreed to meet there when he walked back.

After setting up we met up and along with a young lady hiking (cicillea) if i recall.  We went to the bar and music event on the site….got some excellent burger and chips and beer.

Then they met with a few other French people one who’s birthday it was, so stayed with them to 2am after going to the ‘Cunningham’ bar. And ending in brewing tea…

Unfortunately some horrible pissed French people where noisy to 3am.

Late start and was tired, had a look round local area which was a fort which got somewhat shot up in ww2. The damage to the steel strong points….just incredible

I estimate 18in thick

Then walked to the intra mouros the old town, had good wander, had a crepe and paddled on beach.

Then back to camp, change and back to town for dinner with penny. I had fish soup and seafood selection.

Next day i had planned to go to dinard, but rain and poor forcast meant I decided to visit aquarium and then go swimming.

The swim pool was faboulus ‘aqua-malo, looked very new and great facility’s. Noisy French man at it again started his knackered and immobile vans engine at 2230 till 2315…When I told him to can it….ten min later someone else went and gave him both barrels.

Next morning late start waiting for sun to dry tent and then off along EV4 to ponterson, stopped at cancal for fresh oyster lunch

Arrived at a lovely campsite in pontorson after a quick visit to super marche, cooked burgers and fried onion. And so ended the st Malo chronicals.
